Review by: Bangkok Dining This place looks like an Irish Pub. It's all green with gold lettering and lots of brown wood. There is a terrace out front with people drinking pints of beer and puffing on cigarettes. Inside there is more wood, 12 different beers on tap, loads more in bottles and a full range of spirits.
The ground floor, although it has flat screen TV's is devoted primarily to those interested in eating and drinking. The second floor is reserved primarily for private parties and the top floor is a 'sports bar' where whooping and hollering while watching sports on the numerous flat screens is the name of the day. When not preoccupied with rooting for their favorite team, denizens of the 3rd Floor play pool, shuffleboard, an addictive electronic golf game, or simply chat with their mates.
All this is fairly ordinary and found at other pubs in town, but what makes Durty Nelly's standout is the quality of it's food. Proprietor Ivan Lavelle says that many people come to the pub, try the typical 'pub grub' and then start sampling some of the other items on the menu. These extra items are what moves Durty Nelly's from the ordinary into the 'gastro pub' category.
The reason behind Durty Nelly's exemplary cuisine is Sam, the chef in charge of the kitchen. Sam has loads of experience and previously worked for several years at the renowned Merchant Hotel in Belfast. In other words, he is a trained hotel chef with an Irish background - an ideal combination for a gastro pub. Many things stand out on Sam and Durty Nelly's menu; let's start with a couple of pub grub items.
Battered scampi and chips with tartar sauce is a pub staple, but Sam's is a standout because of the quality of the shrimp; none of that soggy battered stuff that oozes with grease when you stick a fork into it. And if you are into pies, try the Beef and Guinness with Champ and Vegetables at 275 baht; it's the real McCoy.
Of the gastro items, our favorite, without a doubt, is the 750 baht 12oz Charolais Beef Sirloin with fries and a choice of pepper sauce or Cade de Paris butter. This is local beef, but the flavor of this grass-fed meat is as good as many of the imported steaks we have has at twice the price. If you like salmon try the Poached fillet of salmon with asparagus and hollandaise sauce; at 250 baht it is a great bargain.
There is much more on the menu: soup and salad, sandwiches, burgers, pasta, stuffed potatoes, numerous main courses, desserts and some of the best breakfasts in town. The full 'Irish Breakfast' with all the extras is only 275 bath. There is a special kids menu and a weekend roast until 15:00 on a Saturday and Sunday that is 300 baht for two courses and 350 baht for three.
Durty Nelly's has helped get itself established by offering numerous promotions. Our favorite is 'Tap Tuesday'; you buy an imported beer - say Leffe, Hoegaarden or Guinness at the regular price and get all your refills at 150 baht. And if you enjoy happy houses, head for their 3rd Floor. It is always happy hour with Singha, Asahi, Heineken and Tiger going for 95 baht.
